S10E70 Motherwell 30 Year Scottish Cup Anniversary Special

Thirty years ago this month, Motherwell won the Scottish Cup after a memorable 4-3 victory over Dundee United in one of the greatest Scottish Cup Finals of all time. Along the way, they defeated holders Aberdeen, First Division sides Falkirk and Morton, and Celtic en route to their success.

In this special feature, we hear from four guests giving their memories of that Cup run. BBC Commentator Jock Brown covered every round as well as the Final, where he was joined by Ally McCoist for the big event. Motherwell fans Scott and Andrew of MFC Podcast tell us about their experiences from the Terraces at Hampden and the celebrations afterwards. Finally, striker Iain Ferguson on scoring the opening goal in the Final and what the success with his hometown team means to him.

It was a Cup Final with many great tales. McLean brothers Tommy and Jim going head to head in opposition dugouts a week after their father passed away, Ally Maxwell suffering broken ribs and going onto make a match winning save from Maurice Malpas, young Phil O’Donnell scoring a diving header amongst flying boots, Super Sub Steve Kirk scoring the winner in extra time and Tom Boyd in his last game for the club holding aloft the Scottish Cup. Of course, it is also a time to remember absent friends as squad members O’Donnell, Davie Cooper, Jamie Dolan and Paul McGrillen are sadly no longer with us.

Whether you are a Motherwell fan or not, this is a podcast to enjoy as we hear from the memories of a commentator, two fans and an ex-player as a town in the doldrums got a huge lift from their local side going all the way to win the Scottish Cup in one of the greatest Finals ever.
