S11E19 Groundhopper Special

In our latest episode, John and Donald are joined by a couple of fine guests. We have Adam (@FitbaNomad) and Graeme (@GilesGraeme) on who have a passion for visiting different grounds in Scotland and on occasion further afield.

We discuss how everyone makes their decision on what games to attend, is it location, fixture, derby or because they do a top pie? There is chat about the best pies on offer in Scotland and the reasons why fans are choosing to visit what were traditionally Non League grounds.

The community aspect is a theme that has particular value as fans are treated well, sometimes allowed access to behind the scenes and even on the odd occasion given a free pint. In Scotland, groundhopping ‘day’ takes place this weekend in the East of Scotland so keep an eye out on those fixtures if you fancy visiting some different grounds.

The guys discuss favourite experiences they’ve had on their travels and the worst experience is so hard to beat that no one else even competes.

The podcast concludes with some discussion on Women’s football, the respect and honesty in the game and a historical occasion as Hibs and Edinburgh record the biggest crowd for a domestic game in Scotland. There is also the Lower League predictions game against Ally Graham.

S11E18 Iona Fyfe Special

We love on the podcast celebrating Scottish football and we believe that we should also champion Scottish music from singers and bands.

This week we have Iona Fyfe joining John, Erin and McGill for the first of our football/music specials.

The last 18 months has seen many industries struggle due to Covid and the music industry was affected massively. A sector that brings so much to the economy and to society, just like football.

We discuss how Iona got in to music, the things that she enjoys about football, music, if she had a Genie which she would have to shake off to get three wishes.

Football and music have a feeling of community that bring us together and give us identity. It’s okay to like different teams or bands but its important to be respectful of differing opinions though we may not always agree with them.

There is the usual food chat which seems to give us the most controversy on the podcast so remember to let us all know how you eat your pizza or sandwich.

We hope you enjoy this slightly different podcast which is our first in a series of football/music specials.

S11E17 No Longer Naive: African Football Special

In our latest episode, regulars John, Donald, Erin and Scott are joined by Ibrahim Mustapha who has recently launched his book ‘No Longer Naive’.

The book is about African teams at the World Cup so we discuss what inspired him to write the book and some of our memories of teams playing at the World Cup. It’s really interesting as we talk about what could be done to improve the game in Africa behind the scenes.

The chat leads on to the best African players to have played in Scotland and the impact they have made on our game. Between us we pick a best eleven which would certainly be entertaining to watch.

We conclude the podcast with a rapid review of what’s been going on in Scottish football.

S11E16 SWNT World Cup Preview Special

There was a last minute change in host as regular guest special host John B had to call in sick. With none of the regular Podcast team available, Leading The Line Podcast host Chris Marshall kindly stepped into the hosts chair and was joined by regular SWPL commentator Stuart Mitchell.

The guys discuss the excitement and anticipation of the Scotland Women’s National Team’s upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches against Hungary on Friday and Faroe Islands at Hampden on Tuesday. It is Pedro Martinez Losa’s first matches since taking over from Shelley Kerr in the summer and he’s had to deal with a series of call offs, most notably to Caroline Weir, Kirsty Smith, Lucy Graham and Lisa Evans. The impact of those withdrawals are discussed but there is still a positive feeling that the squad we have is still capable enough of getting six points. With top seeds Spain still to come, these points are vital.

As mentioned, the Women’s side are now playing their qualifying matches at Hampden, and with tickets at just £10 per adult, £5 for kids and FREE entry for Scotland Supporters Club members, it is hoped that the stature of playing at the National Stadium will bring in better crowds over time. Chris and Stuart round off by discussing the SWPL season so far.

S11E15 The Dundee Derby Preview

For our latest episode John is joined by Ethan and Jeff who return after being on the Premiership Preview earlier in the season.

Our main focus is to preview the Dundee derby with our guests being very complimentary about the opposition. We discuss the intriguing tactical battle, key players and favourite memories from the derby.

Scotland recorded a massive win against Austria which means we know what we need to do to qualify for the playoffs. The suspension of Hanley for the Israel game is discussed, how the midfield is shaping up and the excitement around a strike partnership that is developing nicely.

We cover some of the other weekend action in the Premiership, have some food chat, Lower League predictions game and more.

Next month Jeff releases his book, Scotland’s Lost Clubs so keep an eye out for that and he reveals he is in the process of writing a book about the Dundee derby.

S11E14 Guest Special: Stewart McKimmie

In the latest of our guest specials, John B is joined by former Dundee, Aberdeen and Dundee United full back, and 40 capped Scotland International, Stewart McKimmie.

Nowadays, in conjunction with business partner Andy Trail, Stewart co-runs a Recruitment firm called Traill McKimmie, who specialise in the Oil and Gas industry. We begin by talking about how he got involved with this venture and how successful it has been for him. We then go all the way back to his fondest memories watching football growing up and his admiration for Leeds United, then where it all started for him at Dundee after he mistakenly signed for two Junior teams at the same time!

After three years at Dens Park, Stewart was then signed by Aberdeen. In his second game, he picked up a European Super Cup winners medal after victory over Hamburg then he scored the winning goal against Hearts at Tynecastle that clinched the title, with the Scottish Cup completing the double following shortly afterwards. Six more major trophies would follow in a 14 year spell at the Dons, including one as captain in 1995/96, though he also expresses why surviving relegation in 94/95 was just as memorable having endured some unwarranted stick from sections of the home support that season. He wound down his career at Dundee United, something he has regrets over having not played many matches.

We also cover Stewart’s international career, which began in 1989 against England at Hampden, and ended against the same opposition at Wembley in Euro ’96. In his third cap, Stewart scored the winner against defending World Champions Argentina, a game that cemented his place at Italia ’90. He has fond memories of his 40 caps that included three international tournaments and being an unlikely number nine at Euro ’92. We round off with the usual slowfire questions, including an interesting best XI.

S11E13 Tartan Army Wanderer Special

For our latest episode we are joined by long serving Tartan Army member Clark for some stories about his time following Scotland across the globe. He joins John, Erin and Scott to reflect on the game against Moldova and look ahead to a crucial game against Austria.

As always we have plenty to discuss, there is still a concern in front of goal, are the tactics a bit too rigid and how much is it for a pie at Hampden?

Clark is part of the Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal which does tremendous work to help children wherever Scotland play. Check them out at www.tasunshineappeal.scot and if you have any good ideas with regards to fundraising then get in touch with them. He tells us about their event which took place on Friday with special guest Kevin Gallacher.

An alternative Scotland eleven is selected from the Premiership clubs with one player having to be coach.

There is a sneak preview in relation to some Football and Music specials we have planned so keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for them.

The Women’s game continues to gain increased exposure with more TV coverage which is crucial. We give a summary of what has been happening in the game over the last week and wish Glasgow City well against Servette.

In a busy podcast, there is also time for our Lower League predictions game against Ally Graham.

We finish off with some slowfire questions and Clark picks a best Scotland eleven from his lifetime as a fan.

S11E12 Guest Special: Aileen Campbell

In the latest of our guest specials, John B dives back into the world of Scottish Women’s Football as he welcomes Aileen Campbell onto the podcast. Aileen is the newly appointed Chief Executive of Scottish Women’s Football.

A former MSP, Aileen starts by talking about swapping Holyrood for Hampden and what Scottish Women’s Football as a governing body do, including her aims as CEO for the organisation. She then discusses the growth of the Women’s game in Scotland and some of the work still to be done to bring the level up both on and off the pitch.

We round off by previewing the SWPL season, which commences on Sunday, and look forward to Scotland Women’s World Cup Qualifying double-header away to Hungary and at home to the Faroe Islands. Aileen is hoping to look out her “I Can Boogie” t-shirt for the 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
