S10E52 Guest Special: Charlie Richmond

In the latest installment of our guest specials, John B is joined by former Grade One referee Charlie Richmond.

Charlie made his breakthrough at senior level in the 2001/02 season and went onto referee at the top level for ten years before hanging up the whistle in 2012. He talks through the journey of his career, which started at Junior level, though he wasn’t allowed to referee Auchinleck Talbot games because of his Talbot allegiances. He goes through his career through the senior leagues and gave an insight into the communication with players and managers, and how he’d handle flashpoints in key games like the Edinburgh derby.

Despite earning a reputation as one of our top referees, Charlie didn’t get picked for a National Cup Final or an Old Firm match. He explains some of the politics that prevented him from getting these prestigious matches, and the breakdown in relationship with the SFA that led to him quitting nearly nine years ago. He then gives his opinions on the fast tracking of referees in Scotland and thoughts on VAR and why it could work if adopted properly.

We end with the usual quick fire questions, which include a hilarious story about a referees night out in Getafe and a refs 6 a-side team.

S10E51 Wizard of Baws

John and Scott are on the podcast this week with the theme being Australians to have played in Scotland due to podcast being recorded on Australia Day.

We discuss some of the best to have played in the top flight including a couple who were involved in some kind of international swap deal.

The chat leads nicely on to the League Cup semis as it was an Australian who captained Livingston when they won the cup in 2004. The guys discuss whether they think St Johnstone can win the trophy for the first time in their history.

There were only two Premiership games that were played at the weekend so we discuss them briefly before moving on to the latest transfer news.

Scott gives his predictions for the Lower League predictions game and we have some random crisp chat.

S10E50 Guest Special: Jamie Swinney

In the latest guest special, Good John is joined by Stenhousemuir Chief Executive Jamie Swinney.

Jamie begins by how he landed the role with The Warriors and what the role entails. We cover off some of his favourite memories since he joined the club, including a surprise draw with Aberdeen at Pittodrie in the Scottish Cup two years ago, and the involvement with the community, particularly after the first lockdown of last March. He also opens up on the squabbles of last spring to summer amidst the fallout over the season ending/league reconstruction debacle, the challenges of playing to no fans and the current shut down of football below Championship level.

In addition to his involvement with Stenhousemuir, Jamie is a big Scotland fan and he talks through some of the highs and lows of following the National Team, and joy at qualifying for Euro 2020. We round off with the usual slow fire questions including Best Scotland XI.

S10E49 Sixy Football

John is joined by Scott from The Footy Blog Net as we take another trip down memory lane with the podcast theme being 6 a side football.

You may wonder why but it was around this time of year that the Tennents Sixes were played. As youngsters watching football it was something different and exciting.

We pick what we think would be a best six a side Scotland team from our lifetime with contributions from other regulars from the podcast plus friends and listeners.

There are also some entries in terms of club sides in Scotland too. Imagine the likes of Gazza or Moravcik playing in it…

We hope you enjoy this one as we look to do something different as opposed to just covering the weekend action.

S10E48 Guest Special: Scott McGill

It’s the second guest special of the week as Good John is joined by Celtic and Scotland fan Scott McGill.

Scott became a Twitter sensation in the aftermath of Scotland’s historic playoff win over Serbia with his acoustic version of “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie.” He became such a hit that the SFA used this version, along with his take on “Na na David Marshall”, in their video montage celebrating qualification. He talks about this new found fame, some of his memories following the National team and hopes for the Euros, including if he’s been approached to pen the Scotland Euro’s song.

As well as supporting the National team, Scott is a big Celtic fan and he talks about his favourite times following the Hoops, as well as giving an honest account of a difficult season including the farce of the Dubai trip. We round off with the usual quick fire questions, including a combined Celtic and Scotland XI.

Scott’s album “Hard Times Come Again No More” is available directly from his website – https://scottmcgill.bigcartel.com/

S10E47 The Beautiful Game with Daniel Gray

For the latest podcast we take a different approach as we have a special guest in the form of writer, podcaster and presenter Daniel Gray on. He joins John, Scott and Donald to take a look back at football memories and things that made us fall in love with the game.

Daniel gives us an insight in to his latest projects that he has been involved in which can be purchased at danielgraywriter.com. They include the excellent ‘Us and Them’ and the delightful ‘Extra Time 50 Further Delights of Modern Football’

He talks about what got him interested in Scottish football, his love for Middlesbrough and more.

Time flies when you are having fun and this is certainly the case with this one as we only scratch the surface in terms of what we want to ask Daniel.

The podcast concludes with a very brief roundup of the weekend action.

S10E46 Saturday Complainers

John is joined by Andy from the Press and Journal to discuss what has been going on in Scottish football recently.

We kick off by discussing the impact that John Hughes has had at Ross County so far in the week that Stephen Robinson left Motherwell. Later on in the podcast we discuss the potential candidates that have been mentioned in the press.

The Premiership saw Rangers and Celtic clash so we discuss that and the latter’s trip to Dubai. There is some transfer speculation involving the other clubs so we discuss who may move where.

To conclude the podcast we preview the second round of the Scottish Cup and discuss where we think there may be potential shocks.
